The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) is a specialist programme with a strong work-related emphasis. The qualification provides a thorough grounding in the key concepts and practical skills required in the sector with national recognition by employers allowing progression direct into employment or to degree.

This HND in Business is ideal for those who wish to study at the undergraduate level to become better managers. Successful completion of HND allows learners direct entry to top up honours degree at many UK universities.

Programme aims


To ensure a business programme encouraging serious approaches to business, management and leadership is the main aim of this programme. Delivery of qualification of this program has been designed to:

  • Enhance overall skills related to operational/strategic management reflecting the learner’s own skills and knowledge
  • Widen new generation of leaders trained with transferable skills required for making differences in changing, challenging, dynamic and diverse environment
  • Present forums to develop best practices, developing independent thoughts and challenging current thinking
  • Persuade learners for gaining new and challenging perspectives on management skills and techniques through collaborative learning
  • Influence learners towards contemporary management challenges and issues faced by managers and leaders
  • Ensure leadership skills in learners for making differences both in workplace and community where they will serve
  • Provide the framework of contemporary and practical leadership skills that will enhance performance of the learners and to form those valued members of management team.

Programme Summary


This course consists of 15 units (8 core units + 7 optional units) including a Project. There are 60 learning hours for each unit and 120 learning hours for the Project.

Entry Requirements


Learner normally needs to have at least one of the following

  • A BTEC Level 3 qualification in Business
  • A GCE Advanced Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject. This profile is likely to be supported by GCSE grades at A* to C (or equivalent and/or 9 to 4 (or equivalent) in subjects such as maths and English
  • Other related Level 3 qualifications
  • An Access to Higher Education Diploma awarded by an approved further education institution
  • Related work experience
  • An international equivalent of the above

Related work experience or equivalent overseas qualifications


More mature learners may present a more varied profile of achievement that is likely to include extensive work experience (paid and/or unpaid) and/or achievement of a range of professional qualifications in their work sector. Learners who are non-native speakers or who have not studied final two years of school in English will be required to prove their proficiency in English language at a minimum of CEFR level B2, or equivalent; PTE 51; IELTS 5.5; Reading and Writing must be at 5.5 or equivalent.

Course Assessment and Grading


This HND programme is assessed by a mixture of assignments and presentations where applicable. Each unit is internally assessed and graded by qualified tutor/assessors and internal verifiers, and then externally verified by a Pearson examiner. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit and Distinction.

Course Duration


The Higher National Diploma (HND) is a Level 4 and Level 5 qualification made up of 240 credits. It is usually studied full-time over two years, or part-time over four years.

Progression Route


You may top-up your HND to a BA/BSc (Honours) at many UK universities. With a UK Honours degree you will be able to compete in global market for jobs, or even proceed to a Master degree.
